Locher Brewery

Tradition and sustainability from Appenzell

Beer has been brewed at the Locher brewery in Appenzell since 1886 - with an increasing focus on the environment and resource conservation. As one of Switzerland's leading breweries in the field of sustainability, it pursues innovative concepts to minimise its ecological footprint and promote the circular economy in food production.

ENGAGEMENT.

Regional raw materials: Wherever possible, ingredients are sourced from Switzerland in order to minimise transport routes and support local agriculture.

Organic-certified range: Locher brews several beers according to Bio-Suisse standards - including Naturperle, Weizenbier and Gran Alpin. The beer is brewed with organic barley from the Grisons mountains and spring water from the Alpstein.

Upcycling instead of waste: Under the brewbee brand, brewery by-products such as malt spent grains and brewer's yeast are processed into new, sustainable foods - including crisps, muesli and pizza bases. This saves raw materials and reduces food waste. Read more here.

Climate Mission: Together with other food producers, the brewery is committed to improving the utilisation of waste materials and demonstrating how the circular economy works in practice. Read more here.

Sustainable energy: The brewery uses biogas from its own waste water as fuel for steam generation - an important step towards climate-friendly production. The company also favours renewable energies.

PRODUCTS.

The speciality: It is brewed with rice from the Maggia Delta in Ticino - one of the few places in Switzerland where rice is grown sustainably. The result: a light, fresh beer with fine malt flavours that not only impresses with its taste, but also with its regional and resource-friendly production.
